January 22, local time, the Finnish Broadcasting Corporation (YLE) reported that the Finnish government tightened entry restrictions to prevent the spread of rapidly spreading mutant COVID-19 to Finland.

“Our goal is to reduce traffic at the border so that everyone across the border can be tested and sent to the quarantine area,” said Interior Minister Maria Ohisalo.

Entry restrictions include: Finland will restrict entry to all Schengen countries; freedom of Finland’s northern border will be abolished; only spouses, children, parents or grandparents can travel to Finland from abroad; cross-border commuting will be stopped, with exceptions in areas where it is essential to maintaining the functioning of society.

The government further recommends avoiding unnecessary travel abroad.

The restriction will take effect on January 27 and will continue until February 25.
