17 August 2021, the European Commission issued a press release that the European Union is raising 3 million euros for humanitarian assistance after the earthquake in Haiti.

The European Union’s crisis management commissioner says Haiti is in dire need of humanitarian aid in the wake of the devastating earthquake and is rapidly mobilizing support.

Prior to the earthquake, the coronavirus outbreak and escalating insecurity had threatened the country’s security. The situation in Haiti was exacerbated by hurricanes and heavy rains following the earthquake. The EU stands ready to provide further assistance to Haiti.

In addition, the communique stated that the funds would address Haiti’s most pressing needs, such as medical assistance to overburdened hospitals on the ground, water, sanitation and hygiene services, as well as shelter and security services for the most affected and disadvantaged communities.
