On the 15th, the European Union decided to add the new Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad to the sanctions list.

In a press briefing issued on the same day, the Council of the European Union said that the decision increased the number of people on the sanctions list to 289, including travel restrictions and asset freezes.

In addition, the EU has imposed asset freeze sanctions on 70 Syrian entities.

In May 2011, the European Union decided to impose a number of sanctions on Syria, including the arms embargo and restrictive measures against the Syrian leadership, and has expanded the scope of sanctions on many occasions since then.

Faisal Mekdad, 66 years old, is a senior diplomat.

Previously, he served as the Deputy Foreign Minister of Syria.

Syrian President Bashar appointed Faisal Mekdad as Minister of Foreign Affairs on November 22, 2020.
