January 26 – U.S. media said that John Roberts, Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, will not preside over the Trump impeachment trial, but will be presided over by the Pro Tempore President of the Senate.
According to the Capitol Hill, the impeachment trial will begin on February 8. Patrick Leahy, the interim speaker of the Senate, will preside over the impeachment hearing. He is the highest-ranking member of the Senate Democratic Conference.
Lehi confirmed on the 25th that he would wave a mallet and promise to administer justice.
Lehi said in a statement: “The president pro tempore has presided over the impeachment trial of non-presidents in the Senate. When presiding over the impeachment trial, the pro tempore will also take a special oath to enforce the law impartially in accordance with the Constitution and the law.
A Lehi spokesman said that the candidates for presiding over the trial were jointly decided by Senate Majority Leader Schumer and Minority Leader McConnell.
