Syria will host an international conference to discuss Syrian refugees

Syrian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Walid Mualim said on the 25th that Syria has decided to hold an international conference on Syrian refugees in November to discuss the return of these refugees and other issues.

The UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy on Syria, Gil Peterson, arrived in Damascus, the capital of Syria, for a visit on the 24th. According to the Syrian News Agency, Mualim said when meeting with Peterson in Damascus that day that the Syrian government decided to hold an international conference on Syrian refugees on November 11 and 12.

He introduced relevant details of the meeting and criticized the practice of Western countries to set obstacles for Syrian refugees to return to their motherland and politicize humanitarian issues.

After the meeting with Mualim, Peterson told the media that the two sides had a “broad and comprehensive” discussion on UN Security Council Resolution 2254 on Syria’s political process.

He hoped that this meeting and the next meeting with the Syrian opposition Become “a new beginning”. “Hope we can find a consensus on how to advance this (political) process.” Peterson said.

A civil war broke out in Syria in 2011. The Syrian National Dialogue Conference held in Sochi, Russia in January 2018 decided to establish a Syrian Constitutional Committee composed of representatives of the Syrian government, opposition and civil society, which became an important step in the Syrian peace process.

The Syrian Constitutional Council was formally launched in Geneva on October 30, 2019, and held two rounds of meetings in Geneva in November of that year, but no substantial progress was made.
