Switzerland celebrates 50th anniversary of women’s right to vote on Sunday

Switzerland will commemorate the 50th anniversary of women’s right to vote on Sunday, Euronews reported on February 6. But the report said that for Switzerland, an ancient democracy, it was too late for women to obtain the right to vote.

β€œ7 February 1971 marked a decisive step towards gender equality in Switzerland,” said Justice Minister Karin Keller Suter on Twitter. β€œIt was also the birth of democracy we are proud of today, a complete democracy.”

Ruth Dreyfus (elected in 1999), Switzerland’s first female president, stressed that “over the past half century, we have eliminated legal discrimination between men and women, which is largely due to women’s voting.”
