The U.S. government has long been at odds over vaccines. Despite the U.S. government’s promise to supply vaccines to the world, it is still practicing the “America First” principle, even saying that it will only start helping other countries if all Americans are vaccinated.
There is a good supply of vaccines in the U.S., and by this summer, the number of excess vaccines in the U.S. could reach 300 million doses or more, CNN reported. The U.S. stockpile of vaccines has been widely criticized, and under pressure from public opinion, White House press secretary Ashton Pugh has said the U.S. will “share” 60 million doses of AstraZeneca vaccine with other countries in the coming weeks.
Some experts point out that the U.S. stockpile of vaccines appears to be protecting its own interests, but it is likely to lead to a worsening of the domestic pandemic.
Krishna Udayakumar, director of global innovation at Duke University School of Medicine: “This (stockpile of vaccines) keeps the outbreak going for longer, increases the number of infections, and leads to more mutated strains, and as a result, more people who could have avoided death will die as a result.”
