January 5th local time, Hersus Aguire, the Minister of Health of Andalusia, Spain, confirmed that 16 cases of variant COVID-19 infection have been confirmed in the region, all of which are related to the variant COVID-19 strain previously announced by the United Kingdom.

Some of these cases have previously entered Spain from the United Kingdom, and the rest are close contacts of positive COVID-19 cases from the United Kingdom.

Aguire also said that the incidence of COVID-19 in Gibraltar, a British territory bordering Andalusia, has increased significantly recently, and the incidence of COVID-19 in many parts of Andalusia has also increased.

Therefore, the region decided to close the borders between several municipalities and Gibraltar.
