South Korea’s online food transaction volume increased by more than 60% year-on-year last year.

Data released by the Korea Bureau of Statistics and the food industry on the 15th show that South Korea’s online food transactions reached 43.4 trillion won last year due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, a sharp increase of 62.4% over 2019.

According to Yonhap, since the outbreak of the pandemic, consumers have preferred non-contact food purchases, and the volume of online food transactions has increased significantly.

These transactions involve food, agricultural and sideline products, meat and fish products, and meal delivery services.

In terms of trading methods, the turnover of mobile terminal transactions reached 35.1 trillion won, an increase of 70% year-on-year; and the transaction volume on the computer side reached 8.3 trillion won, an increase of 36.5% year-on-year.

According to the food industry, major food manufacturers are also trying to cater to the trend of contactless consumption to meet the surge in online shopping demand during the pandemic.
