Yonhap reported on February 17 that according to South Korean legal circles on the 16th, the Ministry of Justice issued a notice of employment restrictions the day before yesterday against Samsung Electronics Vice President Lee Jae-yu, who was sentenced to two years and six months in prison for a cronies’ interference in politics case.

According to the provisions of the Law on Aggravating Punishment for Economic Crimes, those who commit the crime of embezzlement and dereliction of duty and the amount of the crime exceeds 500 million won (about 2.91 million yuan) shall be restricted from the employment within five years from the date of the completion of the completion of fixed-term imprisonment or the decision not to execute.

Areas of restriction include institutions wholly or partially funded by the central government and institutions that receive government funding or subsidies, as well as enterprises closely related to criminal acts.

Some business people believe that the above employment restrictions are limited to new employment and will not affect the existing status.

It is also pointed out that the state’s restriction on the employment of private enterprise operators is suspected of violating the constitutional right to freedom of choice of employment.
