South Korean Prime Minister Ding Sejong said at a meeting on the 6th that South Korea is facing the “most critical moment” in the fight against the epidemic. Despite continuous strengthening of epidemic prevention control, the number of new cases in a single day has continued to exceed 500 in the past week.

Ding Shijun announced that he would raise the epidemic prevention response level in the capital circle to level 2.5 for three weeks. This means that the capital circle will ban crowds of 50 or more, prohibit indoor gyms, indoor performance venues, KTV and other businesses, and only one-third of students will be allowed to attend school.

In November, South Korea raised the epidemic prevention response level of the capital circle twice, and the capital circle is currently at level 2 epidemic prevention response. Since December 5, Seoul City has implemented an enhanced epidemic prevention measure, requiring cinemas, supermarkets and other closures after 21:00, restricting people’s travel at night.

Seoul also announced on the same day that in view of the rapid spread of the epidemic, the bell ringing ceremony for the New Year will be cancelled. This was the first time since the ceremony was set up in 1953 that the celebration was cancelled.
