According to a report by Yonhap News Agency on February 16, the Joint Staff Headquarters of South Korea (UNK) said on the 16th that an unidentified man found near the military restricted area in the eastern part of Gangwon Province that morning may be Korean.
The Joint Staff said that at about 4:20 a.m. on the same day, the South Korean army found a man crossing the civilian control line south of the South Korean demilitarized zone in the eastern part of Gangwon Province through surveillance equipment.
After that, the South Korean army immediately issued the highest-level “Jingdao Dog Level I” alert when it found signs of enemy invasion, and launched a search with combat forces. The man was found at about 7:20 a.m.
Joint Staff said that the South Korean army is jointly investigating the reason and process of the person’s crossing the border southward, his willingness to surrender, etc., and check the alert situation in the relevant areas.
The military has not found any abnormal movements in North Korea. It is reported that the joint participation does not rule out the possibility of smuggling by sea.
