This is the fourth amnesty granted by South Korean President Moon Jae-in since he took office.

It is reported that the pardon does not include political prisoners.

Former South Korean Presidents Park Geun-hye and Lee Myung-bak were excluded.

At present, Park Geun-hye and Lee Myung-bak are both imprisoned to serve their sentences.

The Ministry of Justice said that the purpose of the pardon is to reduce the burden on ordinary people and provide a turning point for national reconciliation and overcoming the crisis under the circumstances of the spread of the novel coronavirus epidemic.

Among the pardonees, there were 2,920 ordinary criminal offenders, accounting for the largest proportion.
