7 December, UN Secretary-General Guterres expressed serious concern about the situation in the Tigray region of northern Ethiopia, stressing the urgent need for “swift restoration of the rule of law” on the ground.
So far, the armed conflict between the federal government of Ethiopia and the local Tigray People’s Liberation Front has lasted for more than a month.
In a statement made through the spokesperson, Guterres said that the rapid restoration of the rule of law, “full respect for human rights, the promotion of social cohesion, the achievement of inclusive reconciliation, and the relaunch of public services to ensure unhindered humanitarian access to the ground” are essential.
Guterres said that the United Nations fully supported the good offices efforts led by the African Union to find a lasting peace settlement between the Federal Government of Ethiopia and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front. The UN will be committed to “mobilising all forces” to provide humanitarian support to refugees, displaced persons and people affected by the conflict.
United Nations agencies have previously said that more than 47,000 Ethiopian refugees have arrived in neighboring Sudan from Tigray State to escape the conflict.
Another 96,000 Eritrean refugees have lived in four refugee camps in Tigray until the beginning of the conflict, and the camps are still isolated. And the status of communication interruption, it is impossible to keep the latest situation, but the food in the camp is likely to have run out.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said that although the United Nations and the Federal Government of Ethiopia signed an agreement on December 2 to establish a “humanitarian corridor” to provide assistance in the Tigray area in an “unimpeded” manner, there are still problems with “logistics and safety and security”, assistance supplies and personnel.
