According to Bulgarian media reported on April 30, local time, Russian Ambassador to Bulgaria Mitrofanova told the media that she had received a note from the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on April 30. In the note, a Russian diplomat was officially declared “undesirable” by Bulgaria. Mitrovanova confirmed the Russian diplomat as an assistant military attache at the embassy, who will leave Bulgaria on May 5 after nearly three months in office.
According to reports, on April 29, the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs convened russian Ambassador to Bulgaria Mitrovnova to hold talks with Bulgaria’s Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs Yezakarieva. At the meeting, the two sides discussed a wide range of issues, including a bombing of a Bulgarian weapons factory that had been under investigation for nine years between 2011 and 2020. Bulgarian prosecutors suspect six Russians of organizing the bombing. Following the talks, the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a special statement announcing the expulsion of a Russian diplomat.
On March 22 this year, the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a notice listing two diplomats from the Russian Embassy in Bulgaria as “undesirable” and forcing them to leave Bulgaria within 72 hours.
