Residents in Indian capital with severe air pollution still set off firecrackers during festivals

Overseas Network, October 26. Air pollution levels in New Delhi , India, have risen during the Dusera Festival. Local residents set off firecrackers to celebrate the festival, which intensified pollution.

According to the “India Express” report, on the afternoon of the 25th local time, local residents set off fireworks to celebrate the festival, and the concentration of pollutants at the five monitoring stations in New Delhi almost doubled.

These five monitoring stations recorded sudden increases in particulate matter PM2.5 and PM10, which are believed to be produced by combustion activities, including fine particles released by setting off firecrackers. 

According to the monitoring data of the New Delhi Pollution Commission, the local wind speed has remained unchanged or has decreased, and the wind speed is considered to be a key meteorological factor that helps disperse pollutants.

According to the report, due to the new crown virus pandemic, this year’s celebrations were relatively quiet. Compared with the same period in 2019, fewer people set off firecrackers during the holiday season. 

However, local officials said that firecrackers are the only new air pollution source added to New Delhi after 6 pm on the 25th, which means that the rise in pollution levels is to some extent related to the setting off of firecrackers. 

Officials also said that other monitoring stations also recorded spikes in pollution levels between 6 and 9 pm.

According to the report, the air quality in New Delhi is still in a “very bad” state recently. The air quality index on the 24th was 347. The New Delhi government launched an anti-pollution campaign and deployed 2,500 environmental police at 100 traffic lights.
