Heavy snow has been falling in the coastal areas of the Sea of Japan in western Japan for several days, and the amount of snowfall in some areas has reached a record high.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, as of the 9th, the thickness of snow in some areas of Yamagata Prefecture reached 280cm; the 24-hour snowfall in Kamigoshi City, Niigata Prefecture exceeded 1m, setting a new record for the amount of snowfall since the local observation records.

According to Japanese media reports, on the 9th, a total of 12 people in Fukui Prefecture were sent to the hospital for treatment due to the heavy snow.

One of them died in his 80s; a 70-year-old man in Hokkaido was buried by heavy snow and died after being sent to hospital.

Affected by heavy snow, the Northeast Shinkansen was temporarily suspended, and many places Shinkansen appeared late.

On the 9th, at least 152 flights in Japan were cancelled.
