Philippines ambassador to Brazil suspected of abusing domestic helpers, Duterte orders thorough investigation

October 30. According to the  Philippines’ Daily Inquirer, CNN reported on the 29th that Marichu Mauro, the Philippine ambassador to Brazil, was exposed to abuse of domestic helpers. Philippine President Duterte ordered a thorough investigation. .

The former assistant to the Philippine President and Senator Christopher Wu (Bong Go) said in a statement on Thursday (29th) that Duterte had approved the investigation of Maro based on the recommendation of the Foreign Minister Lochin. 

An investigation will be launched in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Philippine law. “The President has always been committed to protecting the rights, welfare and well-being of overseas Filipinos. This is the primary responsibility of the Philippines government.”

In addition, the Philippine President’s spokesperson Harry Roque also stated at a press conference on the 29th that if the results of the investigation prove that Maro is guilty, criminal proceedings will be instituted against her. As an ambassador, she will also be subject to administrative charges. Rock also stated that the Philippine government will bring justice to the victims.

A surveillance video previously released by Brazilian media “Globo News” showed that Maro abused a 51-year-old Filipino servant in the diplomatic residence. She not only attacked the servant’s head, but also slammed her ears. The abused servant cowered aside, looking scared. After the incident came to light, Philippine Foreign Minister Lochin stated that the Philippine government had recalled the ambassador and asked her to explain her abuse of the servant.
