Pandemic effects Malaysia temporarily closes all cinemas from November

On the 30th, the Malaysian Film Makers Association issued a statement: Starting from November, all movie theaters in Malaysia will suspend film screenings or other franchising activities.

The statement said that due to the implementation of conditional control orders (CMCO) by some states in Malaysia and the lack of new film releases in the short term, the above decision was made and the cinemas were required to remain closed temporarily.

The statement pointed out that the Malaysian film industry has been severely hit by Coronavirus Pandemic, and the number of moviegoers has dropped by more than 90% year-on-year, causing huge losses. At the same time, it has injected a lot of effort into facing the standard operating procedures promulgated by the government.

“Although it is not easy to make this decision, in order to deal with the increasingly severe test of cinemas, we believe that this is a necessary step for the long-term preservation of Malaysian cinemas so that we can continue to contribute to the social, economic and cultural structure.
