Official operation of new airport in Germany capital is delayed for 9 years due to “shameful” abandonment of the opening ceremony

On the afternoon of the 31st local time, as the two planes arrived at the Berlin-Brandenburg International Airport in the German capital, the new Berlin Airport, originally scheduled to open on October 30, 2011, was finally officially put into operation.

Brandenburg governor Wojdeck, Berlin Mayor Mueller, and German Federal Minister of Transport Scheuer witnessed this important moment at the airport.

As one of Germany’s most famous “unfinished” projects, Berlin-Brandenburg Airport is considered to be synonymous with planning errors, poor administrative management, failed construction supervision and billions of tax waste.

The construction cost has soared from the initial 2.7 billion euros to nearly 6 billion euros. Because of this, the airport operator and local government finally decided to cancel the grand opening ceremony, believing that “this construction project is shameful.”

And due to the weather, the first two planes that should have arrived in parallel eventually landed one after another.

In addition, with the opening of the new airport, Berlin’s two original airports will become a thing of the past: Tegel Airport in the city will be closed on November 8.

From October 25th, the original Schönefeld Airport was temporarily changed to Terminal 5 of the new airport, until the opening of Terminal 3 of the new airport before officially exiting the stage of history.
