Kyodo News Agency reported on February 3 that the governments of Japan and the United States held working consultations on the financial burden (warm budget) of the U.S. military in Japan after 2021 in the form of videoconference late at night on the 2nd, and resumed negotiations.

This is the first formal negotiation since the Biden administration in the United States came to power in January.

Japan’s financial burden request is tentatively extended for one year at the current level.

Japan and the United States agreed to accelerate consultations to reach an early agreement.
