A high mountain glacier in the northern state of North Arkansas broke down on the morning of the 7th and triggered flash floods, washing out hydropower stations and large numbers of residential homes.

Local police said on the 9th that the remains of 32 victims have been found from the scene of the disaster, and more than 150 people are still missing.

Because of the thick silt piled up in the tunnel, rescuers said bluntly that rescue was very difficult.

Indian Interior Minister Amit Shah said on the 9th that the glacier rupture disaster affected an area of about 14 square kilometers, and the government sent 450 policemen, five national disaster relief emergency units, eight army rescue teams, one naval rescue team and five air force helicopters to participate in the rescue.

The current search and rescue work is mainly concentrated on a tunnel about 1,700 meters long, in which more than 30 missing persons are still trapped.

Due to the accumulation of sludge and stones in the tunnel after the flood, rescuers have not made breakthrough progress despite digging day and night using heavy machinery.

India’s Minister of Electricity Raj Kumar Singh: 93 workers of the National Thermal Power Company of India are still missing, and if they have not been found yet, they should have died.

In addition, 44 people are missing in a higher terrain. We believe that the missing persons buried in low-lying areas have died, which is a huge tragedy.
