Ministry of Natural Resources: South Shetland Islands sea earthquake will not trigger a tsunami

At 7:48 p.m. on January 24, the Tsunami Warning Center of the Ministry of Natural Resources released tsunami information.

January 24, 2021, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake occurred in the Atlantic waters of the South Shetland Islands (61.78°S, 55.51°W) at a depth of 290.0 kilometers.

Tsunami Warning Center of the Ministry of Natural Resources judged that the earthquake would not trigger a tsunami based on preliminary seismic parameters.

Tsunami Warning Center of the Ministry of Natural Resources will continue to follow and analyze the earthquake and tsunami monitoring data, and will not release follow-up information if there are no important changes in the monitoring and forecast conclusions.
