Mexican media revealed on December 7th local time that Masha Barsena, the Mexican ambassador to the United States, officially submitted an application to the United States on the 6th to request the extradition of former Minister of Security, Henaro García Luna, who was arrested in the United States in December 2019, to return to his trial.

Earlier, the Mexican Attorney General’s Office announced that it had signed an arrest warrant for Garcia on November 27.

Garcia served as Minister of National Security under former President Calderón (2006-2012), in charge of the federal police force and responsible for domestic public security in Mexico. Garcia was arrested in Dallas, Texas, last December, and he was accused of allowing the Sinaloa drug trafficking group led by drug lord Guzman to operate in Mexico in exchange for millions of dollars in return.

Garcia is one of the two top officials of the former Mexican government arrested in the United States so far.

Last month, the United States dropped several charges against former Mexican Defense Secretary Cienfuegos, who was arrested in Los Angeles this October, and handed them over to the Mexican government.
