According to the Russian Sputnik News Agency on February 20, Mexican President López issued a constitutional amendment order to abolish the presidential immunity, which has been published in the official newspaper and will enter into force on February 20.

The new version of the Mexican Constitution stipulates that the president can be prosecuted and held accountable for treason, corruption, electoral crimes and “any crime for which citizens can be held accountable”.

In order to bring criminal charges against the president, charges should be filed in the Senate first.

Senators will make decisions based on applicable criminal law.

Constitutional reform was one of Lopez’s campaign promises and was approved by the Senate last fall.

The abolition of the immunity of the President of Mexico is believed to help combat impunity for public servants.
