Mexico Amends National Security Law: Restricts U.S. Agents’ Activities in the Country

According to reports, the Mexican House of Representatives passed the bill with 329 votes in favor, 98 votes against, and 40 abstentions, and submitted it to Mexican President Lopez for signature. The bill was previously proposed by President Lopez and approved by the Senate. 

The bill requires all foreign agents in Mexico to notify the Mexican government of all information collected through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and submit monthly written reports detailing their activities in the country to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Public Security. 

In addition, the Mexican government has also cancelled the diplomatic immunity of foreign agents. It is said that the bill aims to regulate the behavior of agents in Mexico and fill the gaps in relevant laws.

According to a number of foreign media reports, the United States had previously arrested Salvador Cienfuegos, the former Secretary of Defense of Mexico, without notifying the Mexican government in advance. Mexican President Lopez stated at a press conference on the 8th that the move was not a counterattack against the US arrest.
