Malaysia suspends a by-election for parliamentary seats to effectively prevent and control the pandemic

(November 18), the National Palace of Malaysia issued a statement: The Supreme Head of State of Malaysia, Abdullah, agreed to issue a state of emergency to the tripod in Sabah, eastern Malaysia, and postpone the by-election of the parliamentary seats in the region.

According to local media reports, Malay Prime Minister Muhyiddin met with the Supreme Head of State at 4 pm on the 18th to report on relevant decisions made by the cabinet meeting.

The statement said that the above decision is to curb the spread of coronavirus pandemic, and the head of state is also very concerned about the current high number of confirmed cases in Sabah.

It is reported that according to relevant local laws, the work of by-elections for members of parliament can be suspended only after a state of emergency is promulgated. 

The new by-election nomination and voting date will be determined by the parliamentary election committee and will be notified separately.
