On December 3rd local time, according to local media reports in South Africa, South Africa’s Minister of Agriculture, Agrarian Reform and Rural Development, Toko Didiza, announced that locust infestations had outbreaks in South Africa’s Free State, Northern Cape and Western Cape provinces, and control measures are being implemented to curb locusts. The spread, but the current strong winds are helping the locusts fly and spread.
Didiza said he hoped to urge farmers and farmers’ organizations to alert the relevant departments immediately when they find locusts and cooperate with local officials to curb the spread. The South African Ministry of Agriculture has also sent a team of experts to the affected provinces to cooperate with local agricultural sector officials.
