Subsequently, Omar Ayub, Pakistan’s energy minister, confirmed in a statement that there was indeed a large-scale power failure.

According to Abid Qaiyum Suleri, a member of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Committee, the power outage was caused by the rupture of the 500 kV transmission line.

The collapse of a large coal-fired power plant triggered a national chain reaction.
