Joseph Safra, Brazil’s richest man, died at the age of 82

On December 10th local time, the press office of the Bank of Safra of Brazil issued a statement saying that Joseph Safra, the richest man in Brazil and owner of the Bank of Safra, died in São Paulo on the same day at the age of 82 for “natural reasons”.

In the list of Brazilian billionaires released by Forbes in 2020, Joseph Safra topped the list with assets of 11,908 billion reals, making it the richest man in Brazil.

Joseph Safra was born in Lebanon in 1938. The Safra family moved to Brazil in the 1960s. He began to take over the bank founded by his father Jacob Safra in 1955.

The Saffra Group owns the Bank of Safra in Brazil, the Bank of Sáfra in Switzerland and the National Bank of Safra in the United States.
