Japan’s total population as of January 1 this year was 123,842,701 million, down about 430,000 from last year and declining for the 12th consecutive year, the Japan Broadcasting Association (NHK) reported Thursday.

Tokyo has the largest population of 13.2970.89 million, followed by Kanagawa and Osaka. The lowest was Bird Take County, which had 552.046 million people. The population increased by Tokyo, Kanagawa, Chiba, Saitama and Okinawa counties, with Tokyo increasing by nearly 40,000, the 25th consecutive year of increase.

In contrast, the largest decline in the population was in Hokkaido, with about 35,000 people, a decline for the nine consecutive years. In addition, the number of people moving into Japan from abroad has decreased significantly as a result of the coronavirus outbreak, the first time in seven years that the figure has declined.
