According to Japanese media reports, Japan’s defense budget increased by 0.5% in fiscal year 2021 compared with this fiscal year.
Japan’s defense budget has exceeded 5 trillion yen for six consecutive years, hitting a new high for seven consecutive years.
Part of the defense budget for fiscal year 2021 includes: 57.6 billion yen for the research and development of the next generation of fighter aircraft of the Air Self-Defense Force, 33.5 billion yen for the improvement plan for surface-to-ship cruise missiles, 1.7 billion yen for research on the new Aegis ship, and 170 million yen for research related to the new artificial satellite group.
Japan’s share of the cost budget of the U.S. military in Japan remains at the level of 2017 billion yen.
In recent years, the Japanese Self-Defense Forces have frequently purchased and modified military equipment.
Japan’s Asahi Shimbun commented a few days ago that the Japanese government said that it was within the framework of “excedence and defense”.
In essence, this principle has been suspended, and the relevant practices may trigger an arms race and cause instability in the region.
