According to a report from Japan’s Asahi Shimbun on the 24th, data held by the Japanese police showed that there were a total of 748,559 criminal cases in the country in 2019, and 192,607 people were filed for investigation. Among them, people over 65 accounted for 22%, or 42,463. This is the highest percentage on record.
In terms of crime types, more than 70% of senior criminals are suspected of theft, especially female criminals, which is more than 90%. The Ministry of Justice of Japan believes that the increase in the aging population has had an impact on the aging of crime.
In addition, a total of 93,967 criminal offenders in Japan in 2019 were recidivists, accounting for 48.8% of the total. This proportion has been on the rise since 27.7% in 1996.
