Iran’s former international footballer Mehrdad Minavand died of Coronavirus

Tehran, Jan. 28 Iran’s former national soccer team member May Mehrdad Minavand was sent to the intensive care unit of a hospital in the capital Tehran on Jan. 21 due to Coronavirus and died on the night of Jan. 27 at the age of 45 after medical treatment, according to the Islamic Republic of Iran News Agency.

Mehrdad Minavand was with the Iranian team in the 1998 World Cup, playing as a midfielder, and in the 1996 Asian Cup with the Iranian team won the third. He also played for clubs in Iran, Austria and Belgium.

Iran’s presidential chief of staff, Ma Vaezi, expressed condolences on the death of Mehrdad Minavand on 28, calling him a “soccer icon” for Iranians and a “beloved and valuable” athlete.

Iran’s Ministry of Health reported 6608 new confirmed cases and 91 new deaths on the 27th; the cumulative number of confirmed cases is 1392314 and the cumulative number of deaths is 57651.
