Iranian President expresses willingness to cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency

by YCPress

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on the 17th that Iran is willing to continue to cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The Iranian government has previously informed the International Atomic Energy Agency that the Iranian side will no longer take “voluntary transparency measures” under the comprehensive agreement on the Iranian nuclear issue from the 23rd.

Limited by notification

The International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed on the 16th that it has received a notification from Iran that it will stop implementing the “voluntary transparency measures” of the Iran nuclear agreement from the 23rd and will not implement the additional protocol signed with the International Atomic Energy Agency, which allows IAEA inspectors to “rannounce” Iran’s nuclear facilities. .

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Said Khatibzad said on the 15th that if the other signatories to the Iran nuclear agreement could not fulfill their obligations under the agreement before the 21st day, the Iranian government would “suspend the voluntary implementation of the additional protocol”.

Iran reached an Iran nuclear agreement with the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Russia, China and Germany in 2015.

Under this agreement, Iran promised to limit its nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of sanctions by the United Nations, the United States and the European Union.

According to the additional protocol signed by Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency, Iran will open its nuclear facilities to IAEA inspectors without restriction.

In May 2018, the government led by then U.S. President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew from the Iran nuclear agreement, and then restarted and added a series of sanctions against Iran.

Iran has gradually suspended some provisions of the Iran nuclear agreement since May 2019, but said the measures taken are “reversible”.

willing to cooperate

Rouhani said on the 17th that Iran is willing to continue to cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency.” We remain a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency, will continue to abide by the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, and will continue to cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency within this framework.”

He said that he would also express this intention to Grossi when Director General Rafael Grossi of the International Atomic Energy Agency visited Tehran, the capital of Iran in the future.

The International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed on the 16th that Grossi proposed to visit Iran, so as to find a mutually acceptable solution for the International Atomic Energy Agency to continue to carry out key verification in Iran.

Grossi will “continue to consult with Iran”.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Khatibzad said on the 15th that Iran’s intention to stop implementing the additional protocol does not mean that all verification activities of the International Atomic Energy Agency will be completed.

These steps on the Iraqi side are “reversible”.
