According to the British Guardian, Iran’s foreign minister said that Iran will fully comply with the Iran nuclear agreement immediately after the upcoming Biden administration lifts all U.S. sanctions to prove its sincerity.
In setting out the conditions for a new relationship with Washington, Zarif also said that Iran will not require the United States to rejoin the agreement known as the Joint Comprehensive Action Plan (JCPoA) until sanctions are lifted, but some assurance is needed that once the United States rejoins, the Biden administration It won’t simply withdraw from the agreement again like Trump.
Zarif said: “The United States must unconditionally fulfill its obligations under the Iran nuclear agreement. It must show its sincerity, it must build its sincerity, and then Iran will act in full compliance with the Iran nuclear agreement.”
According to the report, Zarif delivered the above speech via video link at the Rome Med: Mediterranean Dialogue Forum in 2020. Meanwhile, the Biden team is studying the Middle East policy of the United States.
Zarif told the audience that the Iranian government did not like the resolution passed by the Iranian Parliament on Tuesday. The resolution calls for Iran to accelerate uranium enrichment activities if the United States does not lift sanctions against Iran, and may end the United Nations verification program by February next year.
But he also said, “Like any democracy, when the legislature passes all legal procedures – these procedures are almost complete, it becomes law and becomes a government’s (must fulfill) obligation.” He also said that the resolution was “not irreversible” and would be invalid if the United States lifted sanctions and allowed Iran to regain full compliance with the Iran nuclear agreement.
The Guardian noted that Zarif appears to have ruled out the possibility of renegotiating the existing Iran nuclear agreement, saying: “We will not renegotiate the agreements that have been reached.” This could be a major obstacle to the Biden administration’s reconciliation with Iran.
According to the report, it is not clear how the United States can convincingly promise never to withdraw from the Iran nuclear agreement. U.S. President-elect Biden said this week that if the United States really returns to the agreement, Iran should know that the United States may “recover” United Nations sanctions “swiftly” if the United States believes that Iran does not comply with the agreement.
