International Air Transport Association: Shanghai replaces London as the world’s largest aviation hub

London has lost its position as the world’s most important travel hub as some Chinese cities leapt to the top of the global travel list, and the laurel has been “taken away” by Shanghai.

The report noted that the British capital plummeted to eighth place in the aviation connectivity ranking, and it was still at the top of the list this time last year.

According to the report, London has been hit harder by the coronavirus epidemic than other major cities, and the level of aviation connectivity has fallen by as much as 67%.

According to the International Air Transport Association’s ranking of aviation connectivity, London currently lags behind Beijing, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Shenzhen, and Chicago and Los Angeles.

The report believes that these data will pose a new blow to London, which has historically been at the center of global travel.

Last month, Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris surpassed London Heathrow Airport for the first time to become the busiest airport in Europe. Business executives criticized the British government for failing to set up a testing mechanism to reduce or even exempt some quarantine procedures.

“Other European countries are getting their aviation departments back to work, and now we see results,” said John Holland-Kay, CEO of Heathrow Airport.

Earlier this week, British officials announced that the “post-test release” mechanism will be implemented from mid-December, and the quarantine time of tourists from the “red” countries with the epidemic will be shortened from 14 days to 5 days after arriving in the UK.

Sebastian Mikosh of the International Air Transport Association said: “The huge change in the ranking of aviation connectivity levels shows that the global aviation connectivity has undergone a large-scale adjustment in the past few months. The level of connectivity in all markets has declined. The change in ranking is due to the decline in some cities more than others.”
