December 21st – According to a New Delhi TV report on December 20, a 14-year-old girl in India who works for domestic service was sexually assaulted by four men on the 20th. At present, four suspects have been arrested.
According to police, the girl met a 17-year-old boy at the place where she worked, and the two became friends. Later, the boy resigned and invited the girl to visit his new workplace, in the presence of three other men.
The victim said that the boy and three other men (18, 20 and 30 years old respectively) sexually assaulted her in the servant’s room at the visit. The police said that they were called to the police on December 20, and four defendants had been arrested and an investigation was launched.
Delhi police said in October that as of September 30, Delhi City had reported 1,241 sexual assault cases this year.
In 2019, India had an average of 87 sexual assaults per day, with more than 400,000 crimes against women throughout the year, an increase of more than 7 percent over 2018 according to the latest data released by the National Crime Records Agency of India.
According to human rights organizations, government statistics underestimate the number of sexual assaults, because in some parts of India, reporting sexual assaults is still regarded as taboo, and sexual assaults that end in murder are purely counted as murder.
They said that crimes against women are often less serious and police investigations are not rigorous enough.
In 2012, a 23-year-old medical schoolgirl in India was reported to have been sexually assaulted to death by multiple people on a moving bus, when the incident triggered a strong protest across India.
