Hospitals have been overwhelmed by the surge in COVID-19 cases in California over the past week, according to CNN. As of January 6th local time, more than 1,000 people in the Los Angeles area alone have died of COVID-19.

“Los Angeles County has already had more than 11,000 deaths due to COVID-19, a terrible milestone,” said Dr. Barbara Ferrell, director of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, in a statement.

She urged all residents to stay home and comply with public health orders.

California reported 368 new deaths from COVID-19 on Tuesday (January 5).

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the death toll in California has risen to 27,000, and about 2.45 million people have been infected.
