Beijing, May 7 (Xinhua) — IAAF President Sebastian Coe told the Tokyo Olympic Organizing Committee and Olympic Organizing Committee Chairman Shinko Hashimoto during a visit to the Olympic marathon preparations in Hokkaido, Japan, on Friday, local time.

Sebastian Coe inspected the preparations for the Olympic marathon in Sapporo City, Hokkaido, on Friday and also took part in a half marathon test, the Japan News Agency reported Wednesday. “We didn’t need to deal with the outbreak (in 2012),” Mr Ko, who chaired the organising committee for the 2012 London Olympics, told Mr Hashimoto. I sympathise with the complexity of the situation and the difficult preparations.”

The Tokyo Olympics are scheduled to open on July 23, but the Japanese government decided in March to reject overseas spectators as the Coronavirus intensifies, and will decide in June whether to allow domestic spectators to attend. Recent polls in Japan show that about 70 to 80 percent of Japanese people want the Olympics postponed or canceled.
