Guterres appoints a new United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process

United Nations, December 21 The spokesman of the Secretary-General of the United Nations Guterres announced on the 21st that Guterres appointed Norwegian diplomat Thor Wennesland as the new United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process on the same day to replace the outgoing Mladenov.

Vennessland is a senior Norwegian diplomat and is currently Norway’s Special Representative for the Middle East Peace Process. Vennessland joined the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1983 and has long been responsible for Middle East affairs.

He served as Norway’s representative to the Palestinian National Authority from 2007 to 2011 and Norway’s ambassador to Egypt and Libya from 2012 to 2015.

Mladenov has been the United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process since 2015 and will step down in January next year and become the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for Libya.
