Speaking at the Davos Forum on the 26th local time, German Chancellor Merkel said that now is an era of globalization and people’s lives depend on global ties.
In recent years, this has clearly been shown before our eyes. “So we have to choose the path of multilateralism,” Merkel said. “Isolationism cannot solve the problem.”
In the ensuing question-and-answer session, Merkel stressed her support for multilateralism advocated by China.
She said: “The Chinese leader made a speech yesterday, and I agree with his ideas in supporting multilateralism.”
Merkel also warned that a divided world is unfair to many countries, and Europe will not stand in line between China and the United States. She said, “I personally hope that [the world] will not form a camp, because it is unfair to many societies.
For example, on the one hand, the United States, and on the other hand, China, and the one party that must be joined is definitely not Europe’s self-positioning.
All parties must have the same concept and position, but also have different interests. So I don’t agree with the ‘complete decoupling’ of the digital field, and even promote the division of the entire international community.
Merkel also said that the consensus between Europe and China is greater than differences, and she is satisfied with the China-EU investment and trade agreement reached at the end of last year.
