German Federal Minister of Health Spann and German disease control agency Robert Koch Institute Director Willer held a joint press conference on May 7 to introduce the current outbreak.

Mr Spann said that while current infection levels in Germany remained high, the number of new cases had fallen and “the third wave of outbreaks (the chain of infections) appears to have been broken”.

Spann thanked the German people for strictly following the pandemic prevention measures. However, he warned federal states not to “sloppyly” relax their vaccination measures. Spann said that if too many federal states relax their vaccinations when the incidence rate is relatively high, the number of infections will rise again, “and exposure restrictions and distance rules cannot be ignored because of optimism.”

Germany’s Bundestag voted on May 6th to pass a bill that would allow fully vaccinated people and those recovering from Coronavirus to travel freely. Several German federal states have also recently implemented regulations.

As of May 6, 31.5 percent of the population in Germany had been vaccinated against at least one dose of the Coronavirus vaccine, and 8.8 percent had been fully vaccinated, according to the German CDC. As of 0:00 local time on 7 May, a total of 3491988 cases of new Coronavirus had been confirmed in Germany;
