In the early morning of December 6, local time, the Uruguayan Broad Front Party confirmed that the Honorary Chairman and former President Vazquez died of lung cancer at home at the age of 80.

Vazquez served as President of Uruguay twice from 2005 to 2010 and from 2015 to 2020, and was the country’s first leftist party leader.

During his tenure, Vazquez actively promoted Uruguay’s social reforms and economic development, with a high rate of popular support.
