First aggregation of variant coronavirus cases in Japan

Kyodo News on January 31, Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare said in a news release on January 30 that five men and women in Saitama and Tokyo in their 40s and 60s had been infected with the variant’s Coronavirus found in the United Kingdom.

Among them, three men and women in Saitama are colleagues and customers of the workplace of men who have been diagnosed with the variant virus.

The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare believes this is the first time a cluster of cases of the variant virus has occurred in a Japanese workplace.

According to the report, another woman in Saitama is a family member of the woman who has been diagnosed with the variant virus.

The family member is also a colleague in the same workplace, increasing the number of workplace-related infections to nine.

To date, the total number of confirmed variant virus infections in Japan is 64.
