According to Euronews on January 21, Cuba aims to vaccinate its citizens this year, which is expected to be the first self-developed coronavirus vaccine in Latin America.

Cuba said it could produce 100 million doses of Soberana-2 coronavirus vaccine in 2021, the most advanced candidate vaccine in Cuba.

“If all goes well, the entire population of Cuba will be vaccinated against Soberana-2 this year,” said Vicente Beres, director of the Cuban Finlay Institute (the national scientific research center).

Compared with many neighboring countries, Cuba has so far been less affected by the epidemic.

The government has reported 19,122 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus and 180 deaths.

This week, the Soberana-2 vaccine entered phase two of testing, involving 900 volunteers.

If successful, it will enter phase III in March, when 150,000 volunteers will participate.
