December 15th local time, President-elect Biden appointed Gina McCarthy, former director of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as the National Climate Policy Coordinator.

According to CNN, McCarthy, who is currently the head of the U.S. Natural Resources Conservation Commission, will lead the newly established “Domestic Climate Policy” department by President-elect Biden. McCarthy served as the director of the United States Environmental Protection Agency from 2013 to 2017.

According to U.S. media reports, McCarthy’s main future work will focus on emission reduction. Biden had previously proposed a net zero emissions plan, claiming to use clean energy completely by 2035.

Biden also promised to rejoin the Paris Climate Agreement on his first day in office. New York’s Deputy Minister of Energy and Environment Ali Zaidi will assist the National Climate Policy Department as McCarthy’s deputy, according to The Washington Post.
