El Salvador’s Civil Defense Department reported on the 30th that continuous heavy rains caused a mudslide in the middle of the country on the evening of the 29th, killing at least 7 people and missing more than 30 people.
The civil defense department said the disaster occurred in Nejapa, San Salvador.
The disaster caused about 4 kilometers of land to be buried and more than 50 buildings were destroyed.
Mario Duran, the Minister of the Interior of El Salvador, said that there are currently about 35 people buried and search and rescue efforts are stepping up. Power outages and secondary disasters in the incident area have increased the difficulty of search and rescue.
