Assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Hariri: One defendant sentenced to life imprisonment

December 11 According to AFP, on the 11th local time, the United Nations Special Tribunal for Lebanon ruled that Salim Jamil Ayash, a member of Hezbollah in Lebanon, was sentenced to life imprisonment for suspected of assassinating former Lebanese Prime Minister Hariri in 2005.

Judge David Ray of the United Nations Special Tribunal for Lebanon said, “The Trial Chamber is convinced that each of the five life imprisonment crimes should be imposed the maximum penalty for simultaneous execution.”

In February 2005, former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri was killed in a car bomb attack in Beirut city, killing 21 other people and injuring 226 others. In 2009, the Special Court established at the request of the Lebanese government officially opened the trial.

In August 2020, the United Nations Special Tribunal for Lebanon ruled that Salim Jamil Ayashi, a member of Hezbollah in Lebanon, was guilty in the assassination of Rafiq Hariri.

The judgment shows that under the ensidation of Salim Jamil Ayash, a member of Hezbollah in Lebanon, an assassination team planned the attack. Ayashi committed intentional homicide (causing Hariri and 21 other deaths), attempted intentional homicide (injuring 226 people), terror as a “co-pritent” Crimes such as assault, planning to launch terrorist attacks, etc.
