Chinanews.com, January 21 According to a report by Japan’s Oriental News Daily, the estimated data released by the Japan Government Tourism Bureau on January 20 shows that the number of foreign tourists visiting Japan in 2020 decreased by 87.1% compared with 2019, to only 4.1159 million.

Affected by the immigration restrictions imposed by the coronavirus pandemic, the number of foreign tourists visiting Japan fell to the level of 1998 (4.1 million), the lowest in nearly 22 years.

At the same time, the number of Japanese leaving the country has also dropped significantly by 84.2% to only 3.17 million.

In January 2020, the number of foreign tourists visiting Japan reached 2.66 million, but with the emergence of the pandemic, it has rapidly decreased, and in May, it fell to an all-time low of 1,663.

Japan formulated the policy of “sightseeing and establishing a country” as early as 2003.

In recent years, foreign tourists have increased rapidly, and their economic contribution to Japan reached a record 4.8 trillion yen in 2019, which is almost one-fifth of Japan’s domestic tourism market.

According to the target set by the Japanese government, foreign tourists should reach 40 million by 2020, but Japan’s tourism industry has been hit hard by the pandemic.
